Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)

wound vac

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), can also be called a "wound vac."  This treatment consists of negative pressure, or vacuum dressing to the wound.  The vacuum pressure is kept constant and runs 24 hours a day.  This accelerates tissue growth, assists in the removal of drainage into an external canister, and improves blood flow to the wound, helping it heal.

This treatment is done every 2-3 days.  During dressing change, the vacuum will be removed, and the wound will be cleansed and debrided if necessary.  NPWT is the "gold standard" of wound care for a variety of wounds, including traumatic, acute surgical, venous, arterial, pressure injuries, chronic, diabetic and neuropathic wounds.  Lehigh Valley Wound Specialists are experts in this type of treatment.
